However, some obese individuals maintain insulin sensitivity and show a lower risk of insulin resistance and T2DM. In this presentation, our data describing mechanisms underlying the protective phenotype of obese insulin sensitive individuals in relation to adipogenesis will be discussed including inflammatory mediators, oxidative stress, fatty acid signalling and environmental factors. | 31 Oct. 2019 | Seminar |

In addition, standard techniques and practices being implemented at Laboratory Animal Research Centre (LARC), will also be covered in this workshop. In principle the lab environment should be planned in compliance with the international standards with the support of institutional experts such as technical and mechanical engineers and scientists. In particular the support staff must be well-educated about the biosafety, biosecurity, biocontainment risk assessment, occupational safety & health administrative policies and protocols. Laboratory safety is of prime pre-requisite for environmental health & safety, because environmental and laboratory safety is the first line protective mechanism to resolve problems and concerns surrounding biological, chemical and radiation spill in the laboratory environment. 1 | First workshop on the use of laboratory animals for biomedical research | Qatar University is actively involved in developing a sustainable scientific research infrastructure to support national and international research collaborations. Biomedical research requires animal models at different stages of the research such as safety testing, clinical trials, genetic testing and immunological responses. Qatar University is the first institute in Qatar that has established a rodent animal facility called Laboratory Animal Research Centre (LARC). At this stage, the availability of expertise in animal care and use is challenging and there is a need to build local human capacity through education and addressing the basic skills in animal research, husbandry and humane care. In addition, there is also a need to disseminate the knowledge about the policy and procedures along with ethical compliance required to conduct animal research. This workshop is a pioneering effort to bring animal researchers under one umbrella. The focus will be on the overview of operational and administrative procedures to be followed at LARC to make use of the facility by various research groups. Moreover, the workshop will provide training of specialized scientific and technical areas relevant to animal facility, animal care, animal research ethics, biosafety, and operational procedures. This workshop will help to gain knowledge and skills from leading international expertise. The workshop will run for two days and will cover more than 12 different specialized training titles. | 8-9 April 2014 | Workshop cum Conference |
